Fisoma F2716 Classical 5 string Bass Guitar 860mm Medium Light Tension Ball end

Not as prone to ongoing stretching as some classical bass guitar strings

Not as prone to ongoing stretching as some classical bass guitar strings

The wraps are tight and consistent. I was surprised by the gauges of the medium light tension.
G was 0.040" or 1mm
D was 0.050" or 1.27mm
A was 0.065" or 1.65mm
E was 0.085" or 2.2mm
B was 0.105" or 2.66mm
Obviously, I had to cut a new nut. Also, since these are even lower tension than the strings I was using, I needed to back off the truss rod, and set more relief than I had been running. The amount of relief my bass had was 0.008" or 0.2mm, raised to 0.012" or 0.3mm.
I also had to reset the string height. I had the string height on the G set at 0.055 or 1.4mm, raised it to 0.07" or 1.78mm.
In spite of these changes, because of the lower tension, the bass still plays quite easily.
One big thing to note about reduced tension, playing quick passages can be tricky. The strings don't respond as quickly, and there is less rebound. Not as much an issue for fingerstyle, but if you use a pick...
Perhaps not the best choice for rock. But I bought these as an experiment. I have ALWAYS had active basses. Now that I have back issues, I put my bass on a diet. Pitched the magnetic pickups in favor of a piezo bridge. Got my bass down below 8lbs or 3.5kg. Yep, a five string that light.
Because of the piezo bridge, I can run these, but regular electric bass? Forget it. Piezo or Lightwave only.
The drawback to active systems is that it's easy for the high frequency spectrum to get excessive. Strings like these are a realistic alternative. It's just going to take time to get accustomed to things. If I get this type of strings again, I would probably get the regular tension.
But for gigging? Probably not.
These do have excellent tone. I will probably keep a set on hand for studio work. These would excel for that.
As I mentioned, they aren't as prone to continued stretching as other brands that I've run on my ABG. However, play hard, and you'll need to check your tuning frequently.
Bottom line, Acoustic Bass Guitar, or Piezo or Lightwave equipped electric - these are a great choice for a warm, low-mid forward string set. Carefully consider which tension to choose based on what and how you play.
They feel good under the fingers, won't hurt your frets, and don't stretch as much as some brands. I would definitely recommend these, especially for studio work, or players with a light touch.
I'd give these 4.5 stars but the system won't let me, so, 4 stars it is.
