Single Loaded Synthetic "CD"string length 120cm CD-type strings are made of a synthetic elastomer designed for basses and meanes of Lutes and Baroque Guitars, characterized by a standardized high specific weight obtained by loading the polymer with metallic copper powder during extrusion (we do not use Mercury or Lead salts). General Warnings
1) Due to their lower density, the diameters of CD and CDL strings are larger than those of their corresponding wound strings – considered at the same tension and frequency, therefore it might be necessary to widen bridge and peg holes. Please check the actual diameters of CD and CDL strings in our tables.
2) Since strings stretch considerably when under tension, it is advisable to increase the calculated diameter to the next available commercial diameter.
For example, if calculation gives a 160CD string, use the next commercial diameter of 165CD instead.
Alway use this rule.
3) We have noticed that sometimes people want to install CD-type strings on the 5th course of single strung instruments, with higher than average tensions (e.g., Theorbos/Chitarroni). This entails a risk of breakages: in fact, CDs are designed to be used for the low registers of ‘ordinary’ Lutes, not for middle registers on Theorbos with single strings and high working tensions. On 5th-order of such Theorbos, therefore, only CDL-type strings are to be used.
4) CD and CDL strings are made of a synthetic elastomer whose main characteristic is that they won’t slide well on the nut (in fact, it’s with these materials that the soles of shoes are made). The solution, therefore, is to slightly raise (or move to the side) the string from the nut groove when tuning it during installation; the string should be placed inside the groove only when the final note is reached. Following this procedure not only will prevent breakages but will ensure an even tension on both sides of the nut, for the benefit of tuning stability.
